Worm Woman
Mary Arlene Appelhof 1936 – 2005
In the 1970s, Mary Appelhof built a container for worms to eat her garbage. It worked so well, she wrote a book called “Worms Eat My Garbage” and started Flowerfield Enterprises, Inc. a company that sells composting bins, worms and other products for people interested in organic gardening.

Vermicomposting, or composting with worms, creates rich soil that helps gardens grow. It gives humans a clean, odor-free, environmental way to get rid of garbage. The worms get a good meal and contribute their poop, or castings, to the production of good soil that grows better flowers and vegetables.
